Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, facing prison, asks a London-based biographer to write his life story, covering his drug addiction and arrest.
Rajkumar Hirani's biographical drama centres on Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, played by Ranbir Kapoor. The film moves through chapters of his public and private life, including his drug addiction, his relationship with his father Sunil Dutt (Paresh Rawal), his acting career and his arrest over a suspected connection with the 1993 Bombay bombings.
When a lyricist brings him a heavily romanticised biography that compares him to Mahatma Gandhi, Sanjay rejects the manuscript. Around the same time, the Supreme Court upholds his conviction under the Arms Act and gives him a five-year prison term. Wanting to counter his damaged public image before he goes to prison, his wife Manyata (Dia Mirza) asks London-based biographer Winnie Diaz (Anushka Sharma) to write his true story. Winnie is initially wary, but Sanjay's frank account of his past persuades her to take on the book.
