About

Three gay men in Spain in 1932, 1937 and 2017 are linked by desire, repression and a family legacy, in a story inspired by Lorca.

La bola negra, by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, is set in Spain in 1932, 1937 and 2017 and follows three gay men. In 1932 Granada, Carlos (Milo Quifes) is kept out of an exclusive club after members vote against his admission with a black ball, following rumours about his sexuality. His father Vicente (Antonio de la Torre) urges him to deny the rumours and try again.

In 1937, Republican soldier Sebastián (Guitarricadelafuente) becomes attracted to a prisoner, which brings his ideology and sexuality into conflict. In 2017, historian Alberto (Carlos González) researches queer identity and comes across a family secret. Penélope Cruz plays Nené Romero and Glenn Close plays Isabelle Durand. The film is inspired by an unfinished work by Federico García Lorca and Alberto Conejero’s play La piedra oscura.
