About
A French actress in postwar Hiroshima begins a conversation with a Japanese architect about their lives, past loves and the city's atomic-bomb aftermath.
In Hiroshima after the Second World War, a French actress, played by Emmanuelle Riva and known only as Elle, arrives to appear in a film about peace. There she meets a Japanese architect, Lui, played by Eiji Okada, who is from the city. In the hours they spend together they talk about their lives and past loves. She speaks of the war years in France, when she had a relationship with a German soldier and was rejected by those around her. Their conversations move between personal memories and the aftermath of the atomic bomb, in a film directed by Alain Resnais from a screenplay by Marguerite Duras.
