About

Chloé Zhao directs Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal in a historical drama about William Shakespeare, his wife Agnes and their family in Stratford.

Hamnet is a 2025 historical drama directed by Chloé Zhao, who wrote the screenplay with Maggie O'Farrell from O'Farrell's 2020 novel. In Stratford, England, William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) works as a tutor to pay off his family's debt. He meets Agnes (Jessie Buckley), a woman with a falconry glove who can summon a hawk. His mother, Mary (Emily Watson), warns him about rumours that Agnes is the daughter of a forest witch and knows herbal lore. Agnes treats a cut on William's forehead and reads his palm. She asks him for a story, and he tells her the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. When Agnes becomes pregnant, her family disowns her and she moves in with the Shakespeares. She and William marry hurriedly, and Agnes gives birth to Susanna in the woods.
