About

In wartime Casablanca, an American nightclub owner meets a former lover whose resistance-leader husband needs help leaving the city.

During the Second World War, in December 1941, the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca is a stop for refugees hoping to reach the neutral United States. Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), an American expatriate, runs a nightclub and gambling den there; its guests include French and German officials as well as people trying to leave. Rick says he is neutral, though he has previously run guns to Ethiopia and fought on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. The petty criminal Ugarte (Peter Lorre) asks him to keep letters of transit that allow free travel through German-occupied Europe and to Portugal. After Ugarte is arrested by Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains), Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman), Rick's former lover, and her husband, Czechoslovak resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), arrive at the club.
