About
Two Peking opera actors rise together in 20th-century China, while one secretly loves the other, who marries a prostitute.
In 1977, shortly after the Cultural Revolution, Peking opera actors Cheng Dieyi (Leslie Cheung) and Duan Xiaolou (Zhang Fengyi) meet again on a stage after years apart. Their shared history begins in 1924 Peking, when the young Douzi is left at Master Guan's opera troupe by his mother and befriends Shitou. As teenagers, Douzi trains for female roles and Shitou for male hero roles. Douzi, later Cheng Dieyi, becomes known for the female lead in the opera Farewell My Concubine, while Shitou, as Duan Xiaolou, plays the male hero. The two become famous opera stars. Cheng secretly loves Duan, who marries the prostitute Juxian (Gong Li).
