Near Berlin, beside a lake, an architect played by Lars Eidinger builds a house shortly after the First World War. The film follows the property and its changing residents across the twentieth century. The period it covers includes Weimar, Nazi rule, the Second World War, Soviet occupation, reconstruction and the end of the GDR.

Three families occupy the house in succession. A Jewish family of textile makers leaves when the Nazis rise; later, communist intellectuals confront the capitalist reality after German reunification. The house remains while generations come and go. Martina Gedeck, Ulrich Matthes, Michael Maertens and Susanne Wolff are in the cast; Stella Denis-Winkler plays Elisabeth Kaplan, Greta Ipfelkofer plays Gerda and Josefin Platt plays Hermine Engel. Volker Schlöndorff directs the adaptation of Jenny Erpenbeck's novel Heimsuchung.
