About

Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika drive through divided Germany in 1949, from Frankfurt to Weimar, where he is to speak.

In 1949, the German writer and Nobel laureate Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) returns to Germany following sixteen years in American exile. With his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller), he travels through a country still marked by the Second World War. In a black Buick their journey takes them from Frankfurt, in the American zone, to Weimar in the Soviet zone. There Thomas is to give speeches for the 200th birthday of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Erika serves as her father's translator. When they reach West Germany, she finds anonymous letters that call Thomas a traitor to his homeland.
