Backbeat follows the early Beatles in Hamburg and the relationship between Stuart Sutcliffe, John Lennon and Astrid Kirchherr.
Backbeat follows the early days of the Beatles in Hamburg. In Liverpool in 1960, art students and friends John Lennon (Ian Hart) and Stuart Sutcliffe (Stephen Dorff) are part of the band; Stu, a painter, plays bass guitar. With Paul McCartney (Gary Bakewell), George Harrison (Chris O'Neill) and Pete Best (Scot Williams), they travel by ship to Hamburg and play regularly at the Kaiserkeller, sleeping in the storeroom of the Bambi Kino. They meet German artist Klaus Voormann (Kai Wiesinger), and Klaus brings his girlfriend, photographer Astrid Kirchherr (Sheryl Lee), to see the band perform and introduces her to Stu. The film focuses on the relationship between Stuart, John and Astrid.
