About
Anne Boleyn returns from France to the English court, where King Henry VIII takes an interest in her.
Ernst Lubitsch’s 1920 film Anna Boleyn follows Anne Boleyn (Henny Porten) at the court of King Henry VIII (Emil Jannings). After years in France, Anne returns and stays with her uncle, the Duke of Norfolk (Ludwig Hartau). There she meets Sir Henry Norris (Paul Hartmann), her childhood sweetheart, now a knight in the King’s service. Henry spends little time with his wife, Queen Catherine (Hedwig Pauly-Winterstein), and is often among his men and other women. Anne is to become one of the Queen’s ladies-in-waiting. On the Queen’s name day, Catherine refuses to receive guests when the King fails to appear. When he announces himself after all, Norfolk hurries Anne from the chamber; her dress catches in the closing door. The King frees her and is immediately drawn to her. Anne becomes a lady-in-waiting, and the King pursues her.
