About
A Romanian immigrant in Bordeaux works as a housekeeper for a wealthy French family and rehearses a chambermaid role in local theatre.
The Diary of a Chambermaid is Radu Jude's French-language debut, loosely based on Octave Mirbeau's novel. Ana Dumitrașcu plays Gianina, a young Romanian immigrant in Bordeaux who is hired by the wealthy Donnadieu family as cook, housekeeper and nanny. She looks after the couple's son Louen while her own daughter grows up in Romania. Vincent Macaigne and Mélanie Thierry play Pierre and Marguerite Donnadieu; Marie Rivière appears as Madame Anne. In the evenings Gianina rehearses with a local theatre company, playing a chambermaid in an adaptation of Mirbeau's novel, so the fiction and the reality of her own life begin to overlap.
