About
After 19 years in prison for stealing bread, Jean Valjean takes a new identity and promises to protect Fantine’s daughter while Inspector Javert pursues him.
Fred Cavayé’s French adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel centres on Jean Valjean (Vincent Lindon), who is released after 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. Under a new identity, he becomes a respected dignitary. He promises Fantine (Noémie Merlant), a factory worker who can no longer care for her daughter, that he will save and protect Cosette (Megan Northam), a girl mistreated by the Thénardier family, played by Camille Cottin and Benjamin Lavernhe. Valjean raises Cosette as his own child while Inspector Javert (Tahar Rahim) pursues him. As social unrest grows in France, Valjean, Cosette, her lover Marius (Vassili Schneider) and Javert have their lives intertwined in revolutionary Paris.
