About

In 1930s Calcutta, Anne-Marie Stretter, wife of the French ambassador, lives between embassy life and an affair while a vice-consul calls out his love.

In Calcutta in 1937, during the monsoon, Anne-Marie Stretter (Delphine Seyrig) lives in the French embassy as the wife of the French ambassador to India. Leprosy is widespread in the country. Anne-Marie was born to a French father and a Venetian mother and grew up in Venice as Ana-Maria Guardi, where she was a promising musician. She gave up her musical ambitions after her first marriage at eighteen and moved to Savannakhet in Laos with her husband, a colonial official. She later married Ambassador Stretter, and after seventeen years in various Asian capitals the couple is now in Calcutta. She has an affair with the businessman Michael Richardson (Claude Mann), which her husband tolerates. At an embassy reception, the Vice-Consul de Lahore (Michael Lonsdale) calls out his love for her in front of the guests.
