About
In Rome, a shy law student accepts a drive from the exuberant Bruno, and they set off along the coast.
During the Ferragosto holiday, the streets of Rome are almost empty. Bruno Cortona (Vittorio Gassman) drives through the city in a Lancia Aurelia, looking for a telephone. He calls up to Roberto Mariani (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a shy law student studying for his exams, and asks to use Roberto's phone. Bruno is late for an appointment, but it has already fallen through. He insists on buying Roberto a drink to thank him, and the hesitant student accepts. The two set off along the Via Aurelia, the coastal road through Lazio and Tuscany. During the drive, Roberto gets to know Bruno: exuberant, coarse, impulsive and a womanizer. A search for an open restaurant and two German women tourists lead them farther from Rome.
