Five halls, from the Boutiquezaal to the colour halls
All five halls are seated, and for most screenings you choose a seat on the seat map when you book online. The Boutiquezaal has 39 red armchairs, including two loveseats and small tables; the other halls are named after their colours.

The building has five halls: Rood, Geel, Groen, Blauw and the Boutiquezaal. In the four colour halls the wall colour returns in the seats. The Boutiquezaal has luxury armchairs and a removable front row, so it can be used for film and for events.
The Gele Zaal and Boutiquezaal opened in November 2025; the other three date from the 2008 building. Seat counts for the four colour halls are not published, so the Boutiquezaal's 39 seats are the only official hall figure.
The halls have air conditioning and a fresh-air circulation system at an average 21°C. The Gele Zaal is entered at the rear and has the best wheelchair-friendly places; the accessibility section explains the route and the seating advice.
How many seats does Filmtheater Hilversum have?
The cinema has five halls but does not publish a total seat count. The only official hall figure is the Boutiquezaal's 39 seats; the other four halls' capacities are not on the venue's pages.

- Regional cinema peer
- De Lieve Vrouw, Amersfoort: 175 seats in 3 film halls
That makes a like-for-like local comparison difficult. Vue Hilversum, the town's commercial multiplex at Langgewenst 20, has seven halls including a Dolby Cinema, but its Hilversum page does not list hall capacities. Published figures for the regional arthouse cinema De Lieve Vrouw in Amersfoort show three film halls of 73, 59 and 43 seats, 175 in total. It has fewer halls than Filmtheater's five halls, so it is a scale benchmark rather than a local substitute.
The 2025 expansion added the Gele Zaal and Boutiquezaal to the original three halls, so any pre-2025 total no longer describes the building. For a group or a private screening, ask the venue directly rather than relying on an old capacity figure.

Coffee, beer and cake in the foyer
The foyer bar serves coffee, tapped beer and wine, plus snacks and cakes. The wine comes from local partner Il Divino and is poured by volunteers; cakes are from Toetjes van Titia, cheese from Echte Liefde and nuts from C'est Bon.
The foyer was enlarged and refurnished in 2025 with tables and chairs, armchairs and bar stools, so there is room to sit before or after the film.
The bar also sells savoury snacks and small cakes from Hilversum suppliers. The apple and carrot cakes from Toetjes van Titia are the daytime favourite, with savoury grilled vegetable or cheese snacks in the evening.
Show your film ticket at De Open Keuken, five minutes' walk away on the Laanstraat/Weversplein, for 15% off your dinner.

Accessibility: step-free access, subtitles and audio description
Every hall has wheelchair spaces. The cinema is step-free on the ground floor, with a lift to the Boutiquezaal and an accessible toilet. The Gele Zaal has the best wheelchair-friendly places; wheelchair spaces are booked by phone or at the box office, not online.
In the Gele Zaal you enter at the rear and the aisle slopes down to the front row. Visitors with limited mobility are advised to choose a seat near the back rows. The rear row is temporarily further back, which can make subtitles harder to read if you are under 1.60 m; booster cushions are available.
Earcatch provides audio description for many films, and Subcatch provides special subtitles for Dutch films and documentaries. Both work through an app on your phone or tablet, with the sound or subtitles synchronised to the film.
There is one disabled parking space at Herenplein 5, about 25 m from the entrance. The page also lists one at Groest 94, 150 m away, and six in the Hilvertshof garage, 300 m away.

A non-profit film theatre since 1978
Filmtheater Hilversum has been the place for quality film in the media city since 1978. It has occupied its own building on the Herenplein since 2008 and now has five halls.
The cinema is run by Stichting Filmtheater Hilversum, a non-profit organisation. It has been the place for quality film since 1978 and moved to the Herenplein building in 2008, when the first screening took place on 7 March. The move took the programme from four to twelve screenings a day.
A 2025 expansion added the Gele Zaal and the Boutiquezaal and enlarged the foyer, taking the cinema from three to five halls. The expanded building was officially opened on 4 November 2025. It now programmes at least twelve screenings a day and receives more than 140,000 visitors a year.
The programme mixes new arthouse releases with theme programmes, children's activities, Royal Opera House and Royal Ballet screenings, a film club and school programmes. Once a year the cinema holds an open-air screening in the Dudokpark and its own Filmfestival Hilversum.
The organisation is independent in its programming. It is financed mainly by ticket and bar sales, with subsidies from the municipality of Hilversum and Europa Cinemas, and Rabobank Gooi en Vechtstreek as a sponsor since January 2020. More than 140 volunteers, six permanent staff and a supervisory board keep it running.
