About

Ana Vaz's experimental documentary explores the impact of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster through Yoko Hayasuke's journal Diary of a Radioactive Brain.

Fire Flower (Hanabi) is an experimental documentary by Brazilian filmmaker Ana Vaz, who worked on it for ten years. It concerns the impact of the 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima, in the wake of the tsunami after the Tōhoku earthquake. A central element is Yoko Hayasuke's journal Diary of a Radioactive Brain; Vaz quotes the Japanese writer in a voice-over. The film shows a world where something has happened but life continues: Tokyo keeps growing and new soil replaces irradiated land. The cast includes Yukari Morimoto, Kota Takeuchi, Ayami Awazuhara, Yoko Hayasuke, Ana Vaz, Sadako Aoki, Kazuhiro Ozaki and Tarachine.
