About
In 1950s Italy, a con artist sent to bring home a rich playboy is drawn into the man's privileged world.
In 1950s New York, Tom Ripley (Matt Damon), an American con artist, is approached by shipbuilding magnate Herbert Greenleaf (James Rebhorn). Greenleaf thinks Tom and his son Dickie were at Princeton together and pays him to go to Italy and persuade Dickie (Jude Law), a rich, spoiled playboy, to come home. On the crossing Tom passes himself off as Dickie and meets American socialite Meredith Logue (Cate Blanchett). In the seaside village of Mongibello he introduces himself to Dickie and Dickie's girlfriend Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow) as an old Princeton acquaintance. Dickie's friend Freddie Miles (Philip Seymour Hoffman) treats Tom with suspicion. Tom is drawn to Dickie's moneyed world.
