About
A Facebook data engineer and a Wall Street Journal reporter work to expose the social network’s guarded secrets.
In 2019, data engineer Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) joins Facebook’s Civic Integrity team. She believes the platform can connect people, but finds that its leadership values engagement and income more than keeping users safe. Teddy Marks (Billy Magnussen), a media relations executive, briefs staff on journalists trying to obtain internal information. When Frances tries to air her concerns in a public forum, the session ends before she can speak, and colleagues dismiss her. At The Wall Street Journal, political reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) joins the San Francisco bureau and is assigned to cover Facebook; he doubts the company’s effect on American life. He uses LinkedIn to reach Civic Integrity employees and eventually makes contact with Frances, who agrees to meet despite fearing what breaking her non-disclosure agreement could bring.
