About
A lonely Vietnam veteran drives a night taxi in New York, keeps a diary and becomes fixated on a campaign worker and a young prostitute.
In New York City, in a period of urban decay after the Vietnam War, former Marine and Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) suffers from chronic insomnia and loneliness. He takes a job as a night-shift taxi driver, spending his breaks in adult movie theaters and keeping a diary whose voice-over reveals his growing alienation. Travis is disgusted by the crime and decay he sees and dreams of cleaning the city's filth off the streets. He becomes infatuated with Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a campaign worker for Senator Charles Palantine (Leonard Harris), who is running for president. One evening Iris (Jodie Foster), a twelve-year-old prostitute, gets into his taxi while trying to escape her pimp.
