About
A New York columnist reports on a woman who left three fiancés at the altar and is about to marry again.
Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts) has already left three fiancés at the altar, which earns her the nickname the Runaway Bride in her hometown. New York columnist Ike Graham (Richard Gere) writes an unflattering article about her after hearing her story in a bar from a man he does not realise is one of her former fiancés. The piece contains errors, and when Maggie sends a rebuttal to the newspaper, Ike loses his job. His boss gives him a chance to write a thorough, truthful article about Maggie. Ike travels to Hale, Maryland, where Maggie works in her family's hardware store and makes designer lamps from spare industrial parts. Her fourth groom-to-be is high-school football coach Bob Kelly (Christopher Meloni).
