About
A homeless man who has lost his dog jumps into the pool of a wealthy Beverly Hills couple, and Dave Whiteman saves him.
Paul Mazursky’s 1986 comedy Down and Out in Beverly Hills centres on Dave and Barbara Whiteman (Richard Dreyfuss and Bette Midler), a nouveau-riche couple in Beverly Hills whose twenty-year marriage has gone stale. Dave runs Dav-Bar, a business making wire garment hangers, and is having an affair with the live-in maid, Carmen (Elizabeth Peña). Barbara deals with constant anxiety through shopping and New Age therapies. Their son Max (Evan Richards) communicates with his parents mainly through his avant-garde videos, while Dave thinks their nineteen-year-old daughter Jenny (Tracy Nelson) is anorexic. The family dog, Matisse, is also poorly adjusted. Then Jerry Baskin (Nick Nolte), a homeless man who has lost his dog, jumps into the Whitemans’ swimming pool; Dave saves him, and Jerry moves into the house.
