About

A computer expert examines a television network's reference library to see whether his new machine can replace its staff.

At the Federal Broadcasting Network in Midtown Manhattan, Bunny Watson (Katharine Hepburn) runs the reference library. Her staff answers questions from the programming, news and promotional departments using the company's own book collection. Richard Sumner (Spencer Tracy), a methods engineer and efficiency expert, invented EMERAC, an early computer nicknamed Emmy. The network's president has already bought one for accounting and now asks Sumner to examine whether the library could be replaced by his machine. Sumner is to keep the purpose of his visit quiet. Bunny and network executive Mike Cutler (Gig Young) have been seeing each other for seven years. Peg Costello (Joan Blondell), Sylvia Blair (Dina Merrill) and Ruthie Saylor (Sue Randall) also work in the department.
