About

A documentary in which Sandra Hüller tells the story of a woman leaving a long-term violent relationship and of a system that looks away.

Alina Cyranek’s documentary Curtains, originally Fassaden, centres on a woman who leaves a violent relationship that lasted many years. Sandra Hüller tells her story, which also turns to the political and social system that prefers to look away and to the power structures behind the facades. The film shows how the state protects women and where that protection falls short. Domestic violence against women is the subject: what those affected experience in toxic relationships, what the violence does to their lives and how they seek a way out and help. The narrative draws on four real accounts, combined into one story to keep the women anonymous. A dance pair creates images of a relationship in a black box; animation makes the manipulation of the woman increasingly visible, while expert interviews place power relations and relationship structures in context.
