About

A prehistoric tribe finds an alien monolith; millions of years later, astronauts and HAL 9000 travel to Jupiter to investigate a similar object.

In a prehistoric veld, a tribe of hominins is driven from a water hole by a rival tribe. The next day they find an alien monolith, and the tribe learns to use animal bones as weapons. Millions of years later, Dr Heywood Floyd (William Sylvester) travels to Clavius Base, a lunar outpost. At Space Station Five he meets Russian scientists worried that Clavius is unresponsive; he refuses to discuss rumours of an epidemic. At Clavius, Floyd stresses secrecy about a new discovery, with the epidemic as a cover story. A mysterious object has been found beneath the lunar surface, and a voyage to Jupiter is mounted to investigate an alien monolith, with astronauts David Bowman (Keir Dullea) and Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) aboard and the sentient supercomputer HAL 9000 (voice of Douglas Rain).
