Pavements is Alex Ross Perry’s experimental docufiction about the American indie band Pavement. It combines documentary footage of the band’s sold-out 2022 reunion tour with scripted layers: an off-Broadway jukebox musical using Pavement songs, a museum devoted to the band’s history, and a spoof Hollywood biopic. In the musical, Essem is an aspiring Stephen Malkmus-like musician in a small town. Stephen Malkmus, Scott Kannberg, Bob Nastanovich, Mark Ibold and Steve West appear as themselves, as does Rebecca Clay Cole; Gary Young appears in archive footage, and Joe Keery plays Stephen Malkmus.
