The classics in Breda

7 places that make the city

The places that make Breda: Grote Kerk (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk), Spanjaardsgat, Breda Castle and more, with what is on there next.

Grote Kerk (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk)

The church on the Grote Markt with the 97-metre tower you can see from far away. Inside are the tombs of the Nassau family, ancestors of the royal house. With a guide you can climb the 287 steps of the tower, from the age of 12.

Spanjaardsgat

Outdoors

The water gate between two towers of the castle, beside the Haven. You normally see it from the outside; on a tour of the castle grounds you can also see it from the inside.

Breda Castle

Outdoors

The old castle of the Nassau family, where the link between the Netherlands and the House of Orange-Nassau began. Since 1828 it has been the Royal Military Academy, so you visit the grounds on a guided tour.

The Haven

Outdoors

Once a port where seagoing ships brought beer and fish, now the spot in the centre to sit on a terrace by the water. Sightseeing boats leave from here past the Spanjaardsgat, and you can hire a canoe, motorboat or waterbike.

Stedelijk Museum Breda

The city museum in the old Oudemannenhuis on the Boschstraat. It tells the story of Breda and the Nassaus and shows contemporary visual culture. It took over from Breda's Museum.

Valkenberg park

Outdoors

The city park behind the castle, once the castle garden, with a pond and a fountain. The free pop festival Breda Barst is held here.

Begijnhof

A walled courtyard of small houses around a herb garden, just off the busy centre. There is a small museum about the beguines who lived here.
