About
A writer takes a winter caretaker job at an isolated mountain hotel and moves in with his wife and their young son.
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), a writer, takes a job as winter caretaker at the Overlook Hotel, a remote resort in the Colorado Rocky Mountains that is closed for the season. He moves in with his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and their son Danny (Danny Lloyd), and the family is cut off from the outside world for the winter months.
Hotel manager Stuart Ullman (Barry Nelson) is the one who hires Jack. Before the family leaves for the hotel, its head chef Dick Hallorann (Scatman Crothers) speaks with Danny about a telepathic gift the two of them share, which Hallorann calls shining, and the boy has a premonition and a seizure.
