About
In 1634 France, a charismatic priest becomes the target of witchcraft accusations from an obsessed nun, which church and state officials exploit.
The Devils is Ken Russell’s 1971 film set in 1634 France. Cardinal Richelieu wants to centralise power and persuades King Louis XIII to demolish fortifications across France to prevent Protestant uprisings, but Louis forbids demolitions in Loudun, where Catholics and Huguenots live together. When the town’s governor dies, control passes to Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed), a dissolute, proud and popular priest who is having an affair with a relative of Canon Jean Mignon. Sister Jeanne des Anges (Vanessa Redgrave), a sexually repressed nun obsessed with Grandier, inspires accusations of witchcraft against him, which corrupt church and state officials are eager to exploit.
