In the year 10,191, humanity has settled the universe, and rival noble houses contend for power. Emperor Shaddam IV grants Duke Leto Atreides control of Arrakis, the desert planet known as Dune and the only source of the spice melange. The spice extends life, expands consciousness and makes interstellar travel possible. Duke Leto travels from Caladan to Arrakis with his son Paul, played by Kyle MacLachlan, and his concubine Lady Jessica, played by Francesca Annis; Jessica belongs to the Bene Gesserit order. Patrick Stewart appears as Gurney Halleck. Among the duke's enemies is Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, whose House Harkonnen is the archenemy of House Atreides. On Arrakis live the Fremen, who have a prophecy that a messiah will lead them to freedom.
