Free classical concerts
You don't always need a ticket to hear great music. Conservatoires, churches and concert series hold free and pay-what-you-wish concerts all year, and in summer many cities play classical music in the open air.
Where free music happens
Free
Conservatoire concerts
Student and faculty concerts of the music conservatoires in Leipzig, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Essen, Cologne and Münster are often free or very cheap. Check the institution's website.

Churches and organs
Churches invite you to organ music, choral concerts and cantata services, often with a donation box at the door ("Eintritt frei, Spenden erbeten").

Cheap for young people
Many orchestras and opera houses sell heavily discounted tickets to pupils and students, often as returns shortly before the start. Ask at the box office.

Open-air concerts
In summer there is classical music in the open air, in parks, on palace squares and along the rivers. The dates appear on the calendar once the organisers announce them.
