What to expect

The Münchner Philharmoniker perform under conductor Lahav Shani, with soprano Chen Reiss.

The programme includes Paul Ben-Haim's Concerto grosso, his »Pan« for soprano and orchestra, and Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4 in G major.

Ben-Haim's Concerto grosso was announced for 7 March 1933 but was removed from the programme after the Nazi takeover.

Ben-Haim was a Jewish composer born in Munich as Paul Frankenburger and emigrated to Palestine soon after, taking the name Paul Ben-Haim.

»Pan« comes from his Munich period and tells of a dreamed encounter between a woman and the Greek god Pan.

Mahler's Fourth Symphony was premiered by the Münchner Philharmoniker in 1901 under Mahler's direction.

The symphony moves in an illusory world with mask play and double-edged humour.
