About

A children's bookshop owner and a man whose family runs a bookstore chain fall for each other online, unaware they are business rivals in Manhattan.

On Manhattan's Upper West Side, Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) owns The Shop Around the Corner, a small independent children's bookshop that she took over from her mother. Her partner is Frank Navasky (Greg Kinnear), a columnist for The New York Observer who works on a typewriter, while Kathleen uses her laptop and an AOL account under the name Shopgirl. She exchanges intimate messages with NY152, someone she met in a chatroom; they have agreed not to reveal personal details. NY152 is Joe Fox (Tom Hanks), whose family runs the Fox Books chain. Joe is dating publisher Patricia Eden (Parker Posey) and is overseeing a new storefront a few blocks from Kathleen's shop. The two are business rivals without knowing they are also corresponding online.
