About
After the Dashwood sisters lose their family home, sensible Elinor and passionate Marianne navigate courtship and marriage in a society ruled by money and status.
Based on Jane Austen's 1811 novel, Sense and Sensibility centres on the Dashwood sisters: sensible Elinor (Emma Thompson) and passionate Marianne (Kate Winslet). When the family estate passes by law to John, Henry Dashwood's son from an earlier marriage, Mrs Dashwood (Gemma Jones) and her daughters are left with a small income and without a home. John's wife Fanny disapproves of the growing attachment between Elinor and her brother Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant). A cousin, Sir John Middleton, offers the Dashwoods a cottage on his Barton Park estate in Devonshire. There Marianne meets the older Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman), who falls in love with her at first sight, while John Willoughby (Greg Wise) also enters their circle.
