About
A death-obsessed young man from a wealthy family meets a 79-year-old woman with a bright, carefree outlook on life.
Harold Chasen (Bud Cort) is a young man from a wealthy family who is preoccupied with death. He stages elaborate fake suicides, attends funerals of people he does not know and drives a hearse. His mother, Mrs. Chasen (Vivian Pickles), is detached and tries to steer him toward the life she has in mind: she sends him to a psychiatrist, arranges blind dates and buys him a luxury car. At a stranger's funeral Mass, Harold meets Maude (Ruth Gordon), a 79-year-old woman with a bright, carefree view of life. Maude lives in a decommissioned railroad car, steals cars and will uproot an ailing tree from a city sidewalk to replant it in the forest. Harold is struck by her outlook.
