About

An elderly alchemist in a plague-stricken village makes a trial pact with Mephisto after a bet between the demon and an archangel over his soul.

In a bet with an archangel, the demon Mephisto claims he can corrupt a righteous man's soul and destroy what is divine in him; if he succeeds, the Devil will gain dominion over earth. Mephisto brings a plague to the village where Faust lives, an elderly alchemist played by Gösta Ekman. Faust prays for the death and starvation to stop, but nothing happens. He throws his alchemy books into the fire, and then the Bible. A book opens that describes how to gain power and glory through a pact with the Devil. Faust goes to a crossroads and conjures the forces of evil. Mephisto, played by Emil Jannings, appears and induces him to make a trial bargain of 24 hours: Faust will have Mephisto's service until the sand runs out in an hourglass, when the Devil will rescind the pact.
