About
William Thatcher, a peasant squire, impersonates a knight to compete in 14th-century jousting tournaments with a forged noble identity.
In 14th-century Europe, William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) is a peasant squire serving Sir Ector. When Ector dies at a jousting tournament, William puts on his master's armor, takes his place in the lists and wins the prize. Although tournaments are reserved for nobles, William decides to keep competing. His companions Roland (Mark Addy) and Wat (Alan Tudyk) help him train. On the road they meet the destitute writer Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany), who agrees to forge a patent of nobility so William can enter under the name Sir Ulrich von Liechtenstein of Gelderland. Among the knights he encounters is Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell), and he also meets Lady Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon).
