The tower that began to sink soon after building started in 1529. The builders kept straightening it as it rose, which left a slight curve. You can climb it in the summer season; in winter it is closed.

The old prison on the edge of the centre, now a cultural centre. Take a tour, visit the museum or the studios, or come for an event such as the Christmas market.

The old weigh house on the Nieuwestad, where goods had to be weighed. The building you see dates from 1598 and was used until 1880; today it is a lunchroom with a terrace.

The city park on the edge of the centre, laid out in 1648. Free concerts play in the bandstand on summer Sundays, and it is where children's activities take place on King's Day.

The museum of Friesland, on the Wilhelminaplein. The collection has Mata Hari, who was born in Leeuwarden, and the Frisian freedom fighter Grutte Pier, and there are changing exhibitions.

The ceramics museum, in the building that is also the birthplace of the graphic artist M.C. Escher.
