About

What to expect

Journalist and UN staff member Fernande van Tets moved to Damascus in 2018, as the Syrian civil war entered its eighth year.

Her book describes a country that declared victory, but where the scars of war were visible everywhere.

During this learning evening, she talks about her experiences in Syria and the encounters that shaped her view of the country.

She discusses religious diversity, how different faith communities live together, and the meaning of faith in a society marked by war.

She also speaks about her contact with Frans van der Lugt, the Dutch Jesuit who stayed in Syria until his death.

His life and work for encounter between people from different backgrounds inspire her story.

Van Tets has a personal bond with Hattem and the Hervormde Gemeente.

After the lecture, there is time for conversation and questions.
