About
A quiet office clerk rents a Paris apartment where the previous tenant attempted suicide, and finds himself watched by neighbours and landlord.
Trelkovsky (Roman Polanski), a quiet office clerk, rents a furnished apartment in Paris. From the concierge (Shelley Winters) he learns that the previous tenant, the Egyptologist Simone Choule, threw herself from the window. The landlord Monsieur Zy (Melvyn Douglas) sets strict rules, and the neighbours treat him with suspicion; knocks on the walls and anonymous complaints follow. At the hospital, where Simone lies bandaged and unable to speak, Trelkovsky meets her friend Stella (Isabelle Adjani). The reason for Simone's attempt is unknown, and Trelkovsky increasingly feels watched.
