How big is Utrecht University?
Utrecht University does not publish one visitor capacity: it is a campus of lecture halls, laboratories and faculty buildings, and open days and meeloopdagen use whatever rooms each programme needs. The figure that describes its scale is the student body: more than 38,000 students across 7 faculties, with over 8,800 staff members.
For comparison, the Galgenwaard stadium 2.2 km away holds 23,750 people, and Theater Het Lichtruim 4.0 km away holds 130. Those are seats in one hall; the university's 38,000 students are spread over the whole campus.

Where to eat and drink on the Utrecht Science Park campus
The campus has several cafés and lunchrooms open to visitors on weekdays. The closest to Heidelberglaan 8 are Gutenberg at Heidelberglaan 3 (Monday to Thursday 08:30-16:30, Friday 08:30-14:30) and the SPAR kiosk at Heidelberglaan 1b (Monday to Friday 08:00-16:00).
Most campus cafés close in the late afternoon; the hours above are the ones the university publishes. The Educatorium and Café Minnaert are a short walk south of Heidelberglaan 8, around Leuvenlaan; the Botanische Tuinen café is further along Budapestlaan and follows the gardens' season.
Hours change in the summer and around public holidays, so check the day you travel. The campus is smoke-free, including the terraces.

Open days at Utrecht University: what to expect and when
An open day gives the overview: presentations, an information market and the chance to talk to students and lecturers about a programme. On-location Bachelor Open Dagen run from 10:00 to 16:00; online open days run in the late afternoon or evening, such as 15:30-19:15.
You register in advance on the university's open-day page, per programme. The programme page gives the building and the programme for the day, so check your confirmation before you travel: the sessions are spread over the Utrecht Science Park, not held in one hall.
The information market is the place to compare programmes; the presentations explain admission, the curriculum and the city. Bring your questions about the programme itself, and ask students what a normal week looks like.
- Register per programme and keep the confirmation: it names the building and the start time.
- On-location open days run 10:00-16:00; online sessions run in the late afternoon or evening.
- Check which building your programme uses before you travel; the campus is large.
Meeloopdagen: spending a day with a student
A meeloopdag is a day with a current student: you follow a lecture or working group, have lunch with students and visit the study association, so you see what studying the programme is really like.
Meeloopdagen run on weekdays and take most of a day. Start times differ by programme, so the programme page and your confirmation are the place to check the exact time. You register per programme in advance: "Meld je dan aan voor een meeloopdag!"
The day is aimed at pupils choosing a Bachelor's programme. The programme's page gives the building and the start time, so check your confirmation and plan your journey to the right stop rather than to the university's main address.
- Register per programme, not for the university as a whole.
- Keep the whole day free: the programme runs from the morning into the afternoon.
- You join a lecture or working group and visit the study association.
Accessibility at Utrecht University
Blue-badge holders can use the wheelchair-friendly parking spaces marked on the campus map; a European disabled parking card is accepted. For a temporary mobility restriction, the university can issue a MIVA exemption for a space on its own grounds.
To apply for the exemption, email [email protected] with a doctor's statement confirming the restriction and an indication of the expected recovery time. The exemption is valid only on university property, not on the public road.
Each building page on uu.nl gives the entrance, the lifts and the accessible toilets, so check the building named in your open-day confirmation. The campus is smoke-free.
If you need help on the day, Campus & Facilities is on 030 253 1300; for an emergency on campus, call (030) 253 44 44.
House rules on the Utrecht Science Park campus
The Utrecht Science Park, the International Campus Utrecht and the university locations in the city centre are entirely smoke-free. Visitors park only in the visitor car parks, and bikes go in the stands.
The permit-only areas are Princetonplein (TNO/Deltares), Sorbonnelaan Noord (SRON), the Cambridgelaan student complex and the UMC Noord garage. A visitor parked there risks a wheel clamp, and removing one costs €50.
Every university building has bicycle stands, some covered and lockable. Bikes left outside the stands can be removed by the university.
Pets are not allowed in the university buildings, except guide dogs and assistance dogs. Clinical areas such as Veterinary Medicine have their own rules, so ask the building's reception if you need to bring an animal.
Getting to Utrecht University by tram, bus or bike
The campus is reached from Utrecht Centraal with tram 20, 21 or 22, or bus 28 or N9, to the Heidelberglaan stop, 150 m from the university's address at Heidelberglaan 8. The same lines stop at UMC Utrecht and Padualaan for the buildings around them.
From Utrecht Centraal, the main station, take tram 20, 21 or 22, or bus 28 or N9, to Heidelberglaan. The stop is a 3-minute walk from Heidelberglaan 8. The same tram and bus lines also stop at UMC Utrecht (6 minutes) and Padualaan (10 minutes).
The campus is 5.4 km from Utrecht Centraal, a 73-minute walk, so the tram or bus is the practical option. Bunnik station is 3.3 km away (44 minutes on foot) but has no direct campus line in the open data.
By bike: every university building has bicycle stands, some covered and lockable, and OV-fietsen can be hired under the car park next to the University Library and at P+R Utrecht Science Park, Uppsalalaan 7.
Avoid the morning and afternoon rush hours where you can: the university advises travelling outside them, and the trams and buses are busiest in the rush hours.
Parking at Utrecht University: rates, garages and walking times
Visitors pay €3.00 an hour, up to €18 a day, in the university's car parks and garages on the Utrecht Science Park, Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 18:00. Parking is free on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and leaving within 30 minutes is free too.
The rate is charged per 10 minutes and there is a daily maximum. All car parks and garages can be entered and left 24 hours a day. The P+R Utrecht Science Park at Uppsalalaan 7 charges €2.50 an hour or €15 a day, seven days a week.
For Heidelberglaan 8, P8-Cambridgelaan (4 minutes) and P5-Leuvenlaan (5 minutes) are closest; P10-Olympos is 11 minutes away and the P+R is 13 minutes.
Do not use the permit-only areas: Princetonplein (TNO/Deltares), Sorbonnelaan Noord (SRON), the Cambridgelaan student complex and the UMC Noord garage. Visitors risk a wheel clamp there, and removing one costs €50.
Blue-badge holders can use the wheelchair-friendly spaces marked on the campus map. For a temporary mobility restriction, ask [email protected] for a MIVA exemption with a doctor's statement.
The UMC garage at Bolognalaan 2 (€3.00 an hour, €18 a day, 24/7) is solely for UMC patients, visitors and staff, so it is not university visitor parking; the WKZ children's hospital garage (P1), 910 m and 13 minutes away, is a hospital garage too. The university's visitor table lists P2-P17 and the P+R, not these two hospital garages, and visitors to the university should use those car parks or the P+R.
| Car park | Address | Walk | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| P5-Leuvenlaan | Leuvenlaan, Utrecht Science Park | 350 m, 5 min | €3.00 per hour; €18 per day |
| P8-Cambridgelaan | Cambridgelaan, Utrecht Science Park | 240 m, 4 min | €3.00 per hour; €18 per day |
| P10-Olympos | Olympos, Utrecht Science Park | 770 m, 11 min | €3.00 per hour; €18 per day |
| P+R Utrecht Science Park | Uppsalalaan 7, Utrecht | 930 m, 13 min | €2.50 per hour; €15 per day |
| Parkeergarage UMC Utrecht | Bolognalaan 2, Utrecht | 430 m, 6 min | Not available to university visitors; UMC patients, visitors and staff only; €3.00 an hour, €18 a day |
Buildings and rooms: which Utrecht University building do I need?
Evenitto's listings for this venue come from programmes across the university, so they are spread over buildings at the Utrecht Science Park, the International Campus Utrecht and the city centre. The venue record is a university-wide catch-all and needs a venue split; until then, the building and room on your programme's confirmation are the ones to go to.

About Utrecht University
Utrecht University's Utrecht Science Park is the campus in the east of the city where most of its teaching and research buildings stand. The university's visiting address is Heidelberglaan 8, the Bestuursgebouw on that campus.
The university also teaches in the city centre's University Quarter and at the International Campus Utrecht at Maupertuusplein. Its open days and meeloopdagen use rooms in different buildings across these locations, not one central hall.
With more than 38,000 students, 7 faculties and over 8,800 staff members, it is one of the largest universities in the Netherlands. For a visitor, the practical questions are the same as for any large venue: which stop, which car park, which entrance and which café.
