Theater De Maagd agenda: upcoming events
Tonight, this week and the months ahead at this venue in Bergen op Zoom.
Plan your visit to Theater De Maagd
How many people fit in Theater De Maagd?
The Grote Zaal seats 624, the Kleine Zaal 100, the arena foyer about 75, the chapter room about 100, and the foyers 150 to 350.
The 624-seat Grote Zaal is the main hall, with a horseshoe of seats and balconies around a stage that can extend to 22 m when the former apse is used as back stage.
The other spaces are the Kleine Zaal (100), Arenafoyer (about 75), Kapitelenzaal (about 100), benedenfoyer (350) and foyer (150 to 200).
No whole-building capacity is published, so the table compares the main hall with two known venues in the region.
Het Zwijnshoofd is 0.3 km from De Maagd; De Kring is 12.7 km away in Roosendaal.

|---|---|---|---|

Choosing a seat: four ranks, balconies and extra legroom
The Grote Zaal has seats in the stalls and on balconies around the horseshoe. The four ranks follow those levels, so the rank tells you roughly where you will sit.
Ranks
4: stalls and front balcony; two side-balcony levels
Extra legroom
Row 1; row 5 seats 1 and 3 left, 2 and 4 right; row 13 seats 1 and 2; balcony 1 row 1
Seat numbering
Odd left, even right, numbered in pairs
Rang 1 covers all seats in the hall and the two front balconies. Rang 2 is the theatre seats on the side balcony, rang 3 the loose armchairs on the side balcony, and rang 4 the highest theatre seats on the second-floor side balconies.
For the closest view, choose rang 1 in the stalls or on the front balcony. Rang 2 and 3 give a side view from the balcony, usually at a lower price, and rang 4 sits highest for the widest overview.
Side balconies are cheaper: at PIAF, rang 1 was €44.50 and rang 4 was €34.50. Youth and family shows can have a single rank. For a volloop or best-available show, or for a performance in the Arenafoyer, Gebouw-T or toneel op toneel, you cannot choose a seat.
Seats are numbered in pairs: odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right. So 6 and 8 are a pair, and 7 is on the other side of the hall.
Extra legroom is available in the whole of row 1, in row 5 seats 1 and 3 on the left and 2 and 4 on the right, in row 13 seats 1 and 2, and in the whole front row of balcony 1.
Your first visit: doors, tickets and the hall
The route from the Grote Markt entrance to your seat, and the rules that surprise people most.
- Doors open 45 minutes before the show, and 30 minutes before a Peutertheater performance. Have your ticket ready on your phone or on paper at the entrance; a volunteer checks it and points you to the right side of the hall.
- The foyer comes first. The hall doors open about 15 minutes before the start, so there is time for the bar and the free, unattended cloakroom in the side aisles.
- Leave coats, umbrellas and larger bags in the cloakroom. Fire rules do not allow them in the hall, and only the theatre's own free chair boosters may be used.
- Turn your phone off, including silent mode. Photography and recording are not allowed during the performance.
- You may take a drink bought at the bar into the foyer, but not into the hall unless the show says otherwise. An included drink is collected at the bar, or is ready on the blocks during the interval, or after the show if there is no interval.
- If you are late, staff admit you at a suitable moment, sometimes only during the interval. Seat numbers run in pairs: odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right.
Eating before the show: Theatertafelen and the bar
The theatre has no restaurant. For a meal before a 20:00 show, Theatertafelen books you into a partner restaurant; inside, the bar serves drinks.
- Theatertafelen is for shows that start at 20:00 or later. Book directly with the restaurant, mention Theatertafelen, and expect to be there 2.5 hours before the start. The table is for up to four people.
- THE BAR at Grand Hotel De Draak serves a six-course shared-dining tapas dinner.
- Bistroclub de Stadsburger on Zuivelstraat 3 offers its menu for €32.50 excluding drinks; it is closed on Mondays.
- Sentido serves a two- or three-course shared-dining menu, and De Gouverneur also takes part.
- At the theatre, the bar is open before the show and in the interval. An included drink can be collected at the bar, or is ready on the blocks in the interval. Alcohol is served only at the bar, with age checks.
- You cannot take your own food or drink into the building, and drinks bought at the bar may not go into the hall unless the show says otherwise.

Getting to Theater De Maagd: train, bus or on foot
The theatre is on the Grote Markt, a short walk from the station and several bus stops. Walking times below are from the stop to the entrance.
From Bergen op Zoom station, cross to Stationsstraat and follow it straight to the Grote Markt; the theatre is across the square. It is 770 m, about 11 minutes.
Van Dedemstraat and Wassenaarstraat are the closest stops, both about 7 minutes away. Noordsingel has the widest choice of bus lines, at about 9 minutes.
The centre is flat and compact, so the last stretch is easy on foot. By car, follow the signs for the centre and use one of the car parks in the parking section.
Evening shows end around 21:30–22:10. The theatre’s travel page gives the route but not last-service times, so check 9292.nl or the NS app for the last train or bus on your date before you travel. The station is an 11-minute walk; the nearest bus stops are 7 minutes away.
Parking near Theater De Maagd: two garages and four car parks
The two covered garages are open 24 hours and charge €2.10 per hour, with a maximum of €13.50 per calendar day. Three paid surface car parks use the same tariff; Kazerneplein has no published tariff or opening hours.
Achter De Grote Markt (Koepelstraat 50) is the closest, at 300 m or 4 minutes, with 150 spaces. It is the quickest choice, but it can fill up on a busy night.
De Parade (Wassenaarstraat 66) is the largest garage in the centre, with 400 spaces, and still only 440 m or 6 minutes away. It is the better bet when the centre is full.
Sint-Catharinaplein (84 spaces) is 290 m or 4 minutes away; Mineurplein is 360 m or 5 minutes and Korenmarkt 470 m or 7 minutes. All three are paid surface car parks at the same €2.10 per hour and €13.50 per day. They are useful when the garages are full, but they can be full too.
Kazerneplein is 480 m or 7 minutes away. No source publishes a tariff or opening hours for it, so check the signs on arrival and do not count on a space.
The theatre sells an exit ticket for €4.95 at the bar. At Achter De Grote Markt you cannot use it if you entered with a credit card, so use a bank card at the barrier.

From parish church to theatre: the story of De Maagd
Theater De Maagd occupies the former Heilige Maagdkerk on the Grote Markt, a Catholic church consecrated in 1829 after a five-year build. It is a neoclassical Waterstaat church, a three-aisled hall with Ionic columns. The façade and tower were completed in 1846; the high altar dates from 1861 and the organ from 1864.
The parish worshipped here until 1987. The municipality first wanted to demolish the church and build a new theatre, but the national government rejected the plan. Amsterdam architects Onno Greiner and Martien van Goor then designed the conversion, which was completed in 1990.
Princess Margriet opened Stadsschouwburg De Maagd on 30 August 1990. The church interior was largely kept: columns, capitals, stained glass and wall paintings remain, and only two columns had to make way for the stage tower. When the back stage in the former apse is used, Joan Colette's murals come into view and the stage is 22 m deep.
The transformation won several architecture prizes, including the prize from the Bond van Nederlandse Architecten (BNA), the Brabantse Monumentenprijs and second prize from Europa Nostra. Today the theatre programmes more than 100 performances a season, from cabaret and music to family shows and musicals.
