How many seats does Het Klooster have?
The theatre hall seats 180 people, the largest room in the building. The music room seats 80 in theatre layout and 36 in meeting layout; the chapel holds 20.
The theatre hall is a flat-floor room with a tribune. The hall comes with dressing rooms and a technician, and the stage can be up to 10 by 10 metres. The music room, chapel, library, room 18 and the media lab in the cellar cover smaller theatre, meeting and workshop formats.
Het Klooster is an intimate house by regional standards. The Grote Zaal of Stadsschouwburg Utrecht seats 1,000, or 600 when eight rows are raised to the balcony; the AFAS Theaterzaal of Flint in Amersfoort seats 804. Het Klooster's 180 seats keep the audience close to the stage.
The rooms are hired for cultural events, presentations, workshops and meetings; private parties are not accepted. Room hire runs through [email protected] and 0348-423066.
| Room | Type | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| Theatre hall | Flat floor with tribune | 180 |
| Muziekzaal 31 | Theatre / meeting | 80 / 36 |
| Kapelzaal | Theatre / meeting | 20 |
| Kamer 18 | Meeting | 8 |
| Bibliotheek | Meeting | 12 |
| Kelder / Medialab | Seats | 30 |
Where will I sit in the theatre hall?
All 180 seats face the stage from a single tribune. The room has a flat floor, so the tribune does the work of raising the view.
The venue says the tribune arrangement gives an optimal view of the stage. The stage measures up to 10 by 10 metres, with professional light, sound and projection. The hall is used for theatre, cabaret, music, dance and the venue's own productions.
Two wheelchair places are in the first row, each with room for one companion. There is room for electric wheelchairs, but scootmobiles are not allowed in the hall. Wheelchair places cannot be booked online; call 0348 42 30 66.
For closeness, ask for a seat low in the tribune near the front; for an overview of the whole stage, ask for a seat higher up.
The other rooms have their own layouts: the music room seats 80 in theatre layout and 36 in meeting layout, the chapel 20, the library 12, room 18 eight and the media lab 30. Ask the box office which room your event uses.
Your first visit to Het Klooster
A first visit takes five steps: book, arrive, leave your coat, find your seat and enjoy the interval if there is one.
Tickets, prices and payment
Tickets are sold online, by phone and at the box office. Prices are set per performance and listed in the agenda; there is no single flat ticket price.
The box office and reception are open Monday to Friday 9:00–17:00; the reception is not open on performance evenings. Online payment runs through Mollie; at the venue you can pay by PIN only, never cash. The foyer opens 30 minutes before the show.
Students can buy a last-minute ticket for €10 one day before a performance, including a drink. A valid student card must be shown when tickets are checked.
If you cannot attend, you can exchange your ticket for another performance in the same season up to one working day before, for €3 per ticket. Latecomers are not admitted after the start and do not get a refund.
Food and drink at Het Klooster
The foyer bar is the place for a drink before the show and in the interval. The foyer opens 30 minutes before the performance and stays open an hour after it ends.
Most professional performances include one free interval drink; the ticket says so when it does. The bar takes PIN only. You may not bring your own food or drinks into the building.
For dinner, the venue's food page points to restaurants in the centre. Midas on Rijnstraat serves a theatre menu with free coffee for theatre visitors; De HALL Burgerei runs 'Breek de Week' with dinner and a show on some Wednesday evenings. Grand Café Plein 7, De Woerdenaar, Sapori Sardi and Phil & Lou are also nearby.
The foyer has bar tables and seating under the historic arches and is used for receptions and interval drinks. It is not a full restaurant, so plan a meal before or after the performance.

House rules at Het Klooster
Het Klooster asks visitors to switch off phones, leave recording equipment at home unless permitted, and keep their own food and drink outside.
Phones and other wireless devices must be switched off before entering the theatre hall. Photography, film and sound recording are only allowed with prior written permission from the management.
Pets, own food and alcohol are not allowed. The venue can refuse access or remove visitors who ignore instructions, without a refund. A valid ticket must be shown on entry, including for babies and young children.
The building is also a rental venue for cultural events, presentations and meetings, but not for private parties. Rentals must have a cultural character.
Accessibility at Het Klooster
Het Klooster has a step-free entrance, a lift, two wheelchair places in the theatre hall and an accessible toilet on the first floor.
A fixed ramp leads to the automatic entrance door. The cloakroom is directly on the right; turn left for the step-free route to the foyer. Loose ramps are available for thresholds, and staff will place them for you.
Doors are at least 85 cm wide, so wheelchairs or scootmobiles wider than 85 cm do not fit through all corridors. The lift has a 90 cm opening and is 145 cm deep; it reaches the upper floors and the accessible toilet. From the foyer, take the lift and follow the corridor.
There are two wheelchair places in the front row, each with one companion seat. Electric wheelchairs are welcome if they fit, but scootmobiles are not allowed in the hall. Wheelchair places cannot be booked online; call 0348 42 30 66. A hearing loop is installed and is on by default; mention at the ticket scan that you want to use it. A video with subtitles prepares visitors for the visit.
- Book wheelchair places by phone; they are not sold online.
- Mention the hearing loop at the ticket scan; it is on by default.
- Loose ramps are available for thresholds; ask staff.

What is Het Klooster?
Het Klooster is the theatre and arts education centre of Woerden, in a neo-Gothic former Franciscan monastery on Wilhelminaweg, a short walk from the station and the old centre.
The building combines a 180-seat theatre hall with a music room, a chapel, a library, a theatre attic, a dance studio and a media lab. The theatre hall is the main stage; smaller performances, courses, meetings and receptions use the other rooms and the foyer.
The programme mixes cabaret, music, dance, theatre, classical concerts and family shows. By its own count the venue presents about 80 professional productions and about 40 amateur and own productions each season. It also runs courses in music, dance, theatre and digital arts, a schools programme and Talent XL for young makers.
The foyer bar opens before the performance and stays open through the interval. The building is also rented out for cultural events, presentations and meetings, but not for private parties.

History of Het Klooster
Het Klooster was completed in 1899 as a Franciscan monastery and is now the town's theatre and arts education centre.
Architect J.H. Tonnaer designed the neo-Gothic building for the Franciscan order; it opened in 1899. From 1920 it served as the order's mission centre. The facade deliberately does not run parallel to Wilhelminaweg: the architect turned it 10% north so that it lined up with the church. A statue of Francis of Assisi stands high on the front facade.
As the order declined, the building was sold to the municipality of Woerden in 1978 and became a regional music school. Its main structure is largely intact; it now houses theatre, courses and meetings.
The theatre hall occupies the former inner courtyard and was built in 1994; the tribune was rebuilt in 2004. The building remains a landmark in the centre, next to the church.
