How many people fit in De Kleine Komedie?
De Kleine Komedie has one hall with 500 seats; the whole theatre uses that single bonbonnière room.
- Seats
- 500
- Halls
- 1
- Carré
- 1,752 seats
- Tuschinski
- 1,290 seats
The theatre is small even by Amsterdam standards. Carré seats 1,752, Tuschinski 1,290 and Paradiso holds 1,500, so all three are much larger. The compact bonbonnière is the theatre's trademark: one room and 500 seats, with no second hall to expand into.
The 500 seats are sold in four ranks; rank 4 is marked as limited view. The comparison below uses whole-building figures for the other Amsterdam venues.
| Venue | Type | Seats | Source |

Seating plan: main hall, balconies and the four ranks
De Kleine Komedie has one 500-seat hall sold in four ranks; the agenda marks rank 4 as limited view and gives no view label for ranks 1 to 3, while the seating plan names the main hall, middle balconies and side balconies.

Rang 4
Seats

Only rank 4 carries a published view warning: the agenda lists it as 'Beperkt zicht' (limited view). Ranks 1 to 3 have no view label in the agenda, so this page does not claim a full or unrestricted view for them.
The seating plan labels the physical layout: the main hall (Zaal), first and second middle balconies (1e and 2e middenbalkon) one above the other in the centre, and side balconies including 1e zijbalkon links and 1e zijbalkon rechts along the left and right sides. The balcony labels give position; the four ticket ranks are priced separately on each event page. The plan's own Mijn Stoel rank legend runs from first to fourth rank and warns that on the fourth rank at least a third of the stage is not visible. The plan does not give a one-to-one balcony-to-ticket-rank table, so check the plan for the area and the event page for the price of your rank.
The event page shows the price for each rank; check it before choosing, because the price can differ by rank. The seat map shows which seat you are choosing.
- The agenda labels only rank 4 as limited view; it does not describe the sightlines for ranks 1 to 3.
- The plan labels the balcony areas by position; the four ticket ranks are priced separately on each event page.
Eating at De Kleine Komedie: the bar and nearby restaurants
De Kleine Komedie has no restaurant of its own; the bar serves drinks, and the theatre works with restaurants in the neighbourhood.
The theatre is small and has little room for extensive catering, so it points visitors to nearby places. The list includes Zushi, Portugália Tasca, Brasserie Marie, Café Schiller, Café de Jaren, Tia Rosa Tapas, Trattoria Graziella and Sterk Staaltje, plus the wine shop Spanjewijn.nl.
Café de Jaren has a terrace with a view of the theatre. The bar opens at 19:15 for evening shows, so you can have a drink before the performance.

For some performances the theatre sells smart tickets: e-tickets with a changing barcode that are scanned at the entrance. History: Amsterdam's oldest theatre, from opera house to cabaret temple
De Kleine Komedie opened in 1788 and is the oldest theatre in Amsterdam; it has been a French theatre and opera house, a church, a bicycle shed and, since 1947, a cabaret theatre.
It began as a French-language theatre and opera house, with King Willem I and Louis Napoleon among its regular visitors. From 1856 the Schotse Zendingskerk used the building, and between 1880 and 1883 the young Vrije Universiteit rented rooms there as lecture halls. It served as a meeting hall under the name Salvatori from 1908 to 1935 and was used only as a bicycle shed during the war years.
In 1947 the Perin-Bouwmeester couple reopened it as De Kleine Komedie. The fire brigade condemned the building in 1973, and it reopened after a private renovation in 1978. Musicalweb describes the journey from church and bicycle shed to the cabaret temple of the Netherlands.
