What to expect
Jacques Vriens is one of the most loved children's book writers of the Netherlands.
He wrote Achtste groepers huilen niet and Meester Jaap, among other books.
At De Schalm, Jacques Vriens is interviewed by Mark van der Linden, programme maker at Bibliotheek Veldhoven.
There is room for questions from the audience.
Bruna Veldhoven is present with a selection of books that visitors can buy and have signed.
Jacques Vriens (Den Bosch, 1946) taught in primary education for 25 years with great pleasure.
With his team, he believed it was important that children discover what they are good at and build self-confidence from that.
His pupils inspired him to write school novels such as Achtste groepers huilen niet, Die rotschool met die fijne klas and Meester Jaap.
Since 1993 he has been a full-time writer.
History was one of his favourite subjects, which is why he also writes historical youth books such as Oorlogsgeheimen, Weg uit de Peel and Smokkelkinderen.
His own youth in a hotel was the basis for the series De Bende van de Korenwolf.
He also writes about social themes: youth care in Niet thuis, euthanasia in Code Kattenkruid, hoe mijn opa vrolijk doodging and divorce in Mijn vader woont in het tuinhuis.
In 2021 his essay Zullen we weer gewoon schooltje gaan spelen? appeared.
In it he talks about his experiences as a teacher and gives his view on contemporary primary education: what is certainly going well, but also where wrong turns have been taken.
Literair Café Veldhoven is described as cozy, inspiring and surprising.
