Tipping the Scales: Probing the neural substrates of decision-making with focused ultrasound

Radboud Universiteit, Nijmegen

About

Soha Farboud's thesis research uses focused ultrasound to study how deep brain regions shape motivated decisions. The event takes place at Radboud University, Nijmegen, on Wednesday 2 December 2026 at 12:30.

About the research

The page describes Soha Farboud's thesis research on how motivation and experience guide behavior.

  • Uses focused ultrasound to target deep brain regions
  • Combines functional MRI, ultrasound stimulation and computational modelling
  • Nucleus accumbens stimulation strengthened learning and biases
  • Amygdala stimulation enhanced first-encounter learning

Who organizes the event?

Organized by the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

What is the research about?

The thesis studies how motivation translates into action and how deep brain regions shape decisions.

It uses transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) to target deep brain regions without surgery.

It combines functional MRI, ultrasound stimulation and computational modelling.

It examines the nucleus accumbens and amygdala.

Who is Soha Farboud?

Soha Farboud graduated cum laude with a Master’s degree in Medical Biology, specializing in Neurobiology, from Radboud University in 2021.

She began her PhD at the Donders Institute that year.

Her supervisors are Hanneke den Ouden, Lennart Verhagen and Pieter Medendorp.

She helped establish a brain stimulation laboratory and the Radboud Focused Ultrasound Initiative.
