FAQ

Who is the speaker?

Taneli Kukkonen (New York University Abu Dhabi).

Author of Ibn Tufayl (2014) and 40+ research articles in Arabic philosophy and the Aristotelian tradition.

Has translated al-Ghazālī's autobiography and his treatise on God's Beautiful Names into Finnish.

Is completing a monograph on al-Ghazālī and launching a project on 'vice in global perspective.'

What is the lecture about?

The lecture looks at Ibn Rushd (Latin Averroes, d. 595AH/1198CE) and his Incoherence of the Incoherence.

It focuses on his response to al-Ghazālī (d. 505AH/1111CE), whose arguments against an infinite past drew on John Philoponus' earlier critique of Aristotle.

The essay argues that Averroes uses a subjectivist view of time: time needs a counting subject to be real.

For Averroes, God is not such a subject, because divine knowledge does not concern particular events or entities.

It links this to Aristotle's Physics and later Christian and Jewish readings.
