About
A documentary journey through the global Yiddish artistic community, from Melbourne to Berlin, New York and Haifa, as artists revive the endangered language.
Welcome to Yiddishland follows a global community of artists who create new work in Yiddish, a language that originated among Jewish communities in Eastern Europe and was almost lost when more than half of its speakers were murdered during the Holocaust. Directed by Ros Horin, the documentary travels from Melbourne to Berlin, New York and Haifa.
It goes behind the scenes of a Yiddish-language production of Yentl in Melbourne, meets punk-Klezmer musicians and looks at a production by Barrie Kosky in Berlin. Most of the artists in the film did not grow up speaking Yiddish, but they find solace, identity and inspiration in its traditions and culture. Daniel Kahn appears as himself.
