About
A documentary about Desmond Tutu, South Africa’s first Black archbishop, tracing his role in the anti-apartheid struggle and the faith that guided him.
Tutu is a documentary by Sam Pollard about Desmond Tutu, the first Black archbishop of South Africa, who became a leading voice against apartheid. The film draws on archival footage and accounts from people who knew him, including material shot over twenty years by journalists Roger Friedman and Benny Gool. It follows his public role as a church leader and activist, and the opposition he faced: white South Africans hated him, while some Black South Africans later called him a traitor because, as chairman of truth commissions, he forgave even those responsible for serious human rights abuses. The film also considers the faith, hope and belief in forgiveness that shaped his work.
