About
A documentary about an 18-year-old Uru-eu-wau-wau leader and activist Neidinha Bandeira, who face illegal logging, mining and land grabbing in the Amazon.
The Territory is a documentary by Alex Pritz about the Uru-eu-wau-wau, an Indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest. The film follows Bitaté Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau, an 18-year-old selected as leader of his people, and Neidinha Bandeira, an environmental and human rights activist who appears as herself. The Uru-eu-wau-wau were first contacted by the Brazilian government in 1980; at the film’s outset they are presented as 200 strong. They face illegal incursions from logging and mining, land-grabbing invasions and settlers using slash-and-burn tactics to establish frontier settlements, in a context the film links to the election of Jair Bolsonaro. Filmed on location in Brazil from 2018 to 2020, the documentary uses footage produced directly by the Uru-eu-wau-wau. Bitaté Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau, Neidinha Bandeira, Ari Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau and Txai Suruí appear as themselves.
