About
Koen Samson documents Rotterdam's Central Library from its 1983 opening through the dismantling of its interior, tracing its changing public role over four decades.
In 1983 opened the Central Library Rotterdam: a building of glass, concrete, steel and yellow pipes in a city that keeps changing. For filmmaker Koen Samson it was already a place of wonder when he was a child. When he learned that the library was worn and faced a major transformation, he decided to record the period before the change.
The documentary follows the careful dismantling of the library's distinctive interior and traces the building's origins. With archival footage, music, personal memories and conversations with employees, architects and others involved, Koen Samson looks back at more than forty years of the library and its changing role as a public space in Rotterdam.
